Volunteer selection at a major sport event: A strategic Human Resource Management approach

Volunteers have long been regarded as an essential part of the staging major sport events both to encourage community participation and contain labour costs. Major often attract a large pool applicants which exceeds number volunteer positions available. Selecting best qualified for available requires selection processes that are fair, effective, efficient from event organising committee perspectives. Using Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) approach, authors investigated factors predicted interviewed perspective organiser. deidentified data all applications (n = 53,234) 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, identified likelihood applicant being selected interview position. SHRM principles were applied decisions but in limited way. The found some evidence links between overarching strategies Games. However, these prioritised short-term goal filling stage successful Games rather than longer-term strategic goals. research contributes better understanding HRM selection, identifying predict possible limitations application database management systems perspective.
